From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 38 C. A. SCHELLPFEFFER. He whose name heads this sketch is a representative farmer of the prosperous County of Dodge, Wis. He was born in the kingdom of Prussia, July 8, 1826, and in his native land received a good education, being self-educated in English. After arriving at mature years he entered the German army, in which he served for three and a half years, but in 1852 decided to seek his fortune in America, and embarked at Hamburg for the City of New York, where he arrived the 1st of April of that year. He came immediately to Dodge County to join some old acquaintances, and for four years thereafter worked by the month for $8 per month. He then bought a forty-acre tract of timber land, on which a log house had been erected and two acres cleared, and began the arduous work of clearing his land, and after this task had been accomplished, he tilled it for several years, then bought thirty-one acres adjoining, and at various times made other purchases as his means permitted, until he now has a magnificent farm of 240 acres, exceptionally well improved, his residence being a substantial brick, and his barns and outbuildings commodious and well made. He came to this country empty handed and his present valuable property is the result of persistent toil on his part, good management and a native Teutonic thrift. In local politics he is independent, but in national politics he has always voted the Democratic ticket. He has held the office of assessor, and in 1859 served one term as chairman of the board of supervisors, was a member of that body three terms, and has been a delegate to various county and congressional conventions. He is the present president of the Dodge County Mutual Insurance Company, and upon the organization of the State Bank at Mayville, he took stock in that institution and was elected one of its directors . He was married in Dodge County, January 19, 1857, to Miss Teressa WOLTER, who was born and reared in Germany, and to their union two sons and a daughter have been given: Henry W., to whom his father has given a part of the old homestead, and who is married, and has three sons and two daughters; Bertha, wife of Robert LANGENBACH, a successful business man of Mayville, and August S., who is at home helping carry on the farm. Mr. SCHELLPFEFFER and family are members of the Lutheran Church of Mayville, and as they have lived upright and useful lives they are in every way deserving the respect in which they are held.
