From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 108-109 MRS. BARBARA ANN SAWYER. This lady was born at Haverhill, N.H., October 17, 1819. Her father, Jonathan WILSON, was a native of Claremont, of the Granite State. Her mother, Mary DRAPER, was born and reared in Washington, N.H., removing to Claremont when a young woman. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. WILSON removed to Haverhill, N.H., where he was actively engaged in farming and lumbering until his death, in 1850. His family consisted of six daughters and one son, the latter of whom met death by drowning at the age of five years. Hannah, the eldest daughter, became the wife of Lewis SAWYER, whose sketch appears in this work. Mary A. is unmarried and makes her home with Mrs. SAWYER when in Wisconsin. She has been an active teacher in the public schools of both Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Barbara Ann (Mrs. SAWYER); Eliza, wife of Joseph FRENCH of Haverhill, N.H.; Rosette became the wife of Solomon SAWYER, and is deceased, and Pauline, who married and died at Bellows Fall, Vt. Mrs. SAWYER received good educational advantages in her native State, and on February 14, 1837, gave her hand in marriage, when in her eighteenth year, to Hon. Hiram SAWYER, a brother of Lewis and Solomon SAWYER, who are represented in this volume. Mr. SAWYER was born in Orford, Granton County, N.H., August 21, 1814, received a good education, and worked at the trade of stone-cutting, which he followed in connection with farming until his removal to Wisconsin, in 1845, when his attention the remainder of his life was devoted to farming. On his claim of eighty acres he erected a log house, and, as his means permitted, bought more land, until he became the owner of an excellent farm of 180 acres, including twenty acres of good timber. In 1856 he built on his place a large and substantial stone residence, and later a fine stone barn, with all the latest improvements, and gathered about him a great deal of excellent machinery for farming. He was a man of excellent business capacity, was successful in everything that he undertook, and was an active tiller of the soil of Dodge County until his career was closed by death, in November 1888. He was always active in local politics, and in 1866 was elected to and served as a member of the State Legislature, filling that position with honorable distinction, as well as several local official positions. He was a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of Beaver Dam Chapter, and was buried with Masonic honors. He and his wife reared a family of eleven children to maturity: Adaline, wife of Wm. BILLINGS, is deceased; Eliza is the wife of N. E. ALLEN, of Trenton, Dodge County, Wis.; H. Wilson is an attorney at law, and is the present probate judge of Washington County; Mary is the wife of George CHILDS, of Menominee, Mich.; Ransom J. is a druggist in the same place; Hannah is the wife of William MAYHEW, of Burnett Junction; Frank M. is a grocer of Menominee, Mich.; Alvah L. an attorney at law of that place; Hattie died at the age of seven years; Mattie is the wife of Josiah SHERMAN of Fergus County, Mont.; Sarah became the wife of D. E. WHITE, and died in Claremont, Minn., in 1893, and Lewis, who is a druggist, and is in business in St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago. After the death of the head of this family, his son Frank took charge of the farm for two years, and since that time Mrs. SAWYER has hired help and rented the place. Mrs. SAWER has resided in Dodge County for nearly half a century, and has a wide circle of acquaintances and friends. Submitted by Carol
