From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 204-205 CAPT. LEWIS RUSHLOW. The attention of this gentleman has been devoted to agricultural pursuits from early boyhood, and he may be said to thoroughly understand all its details. He was born in Clinton County, N.Y., June 12, 1827, a son of John and Rhoda (MARTELL) RUSHLOW, natives of Canada, the latter being of French parentage. Mr. RUSHLOW settled in Clinton County, N.Y. in 1812, and there opened a farm on which he reared his family, but later in life he moved to Franklin County, Vt., where he was eventually called from life. His family consisted of five sons and three daughters, all of whom attained maturity and became the heads of families; but Lewis, the subject of this sketch, and George R. are the only survivors. The latter is the general superintendent of the Lake Champlain Steam Boat Company, and makes his home in Burlington, Vt. Lewis accompanied his parents to Vermont when eight years old and in the common schools of Franklin County he secured a fair education. When not pursing the paths of learning, he devoted his time to learning the miller's trade and spent much of summers on different boats of the lakes and was promoted to the post of captain of a vessel on Lake Champlain and later on the Hudson River, pursuing this calling eighteen years. He then came to Beaver Dan, Wis. (1854), and for twenty-eight years had charge of the mill at this place, during which time he became the owner of the farm where he now resides, on which some improvements at that time had been made. Mr. RUSHLOW moved to this farm in 1877, fenced it, erected buildings, conveniently located within four miles of Beaver Dam. Mr. RUSHLOW was united in marriage in Burlington, Vt., in 1851, to Miss Aurelia LA PIERE, a native of the Green Mountain State, but of French extraction, reared and educated in Burlington, and to their union seven children have been given: Romeo L., who is a merchant of Mitchell, Iowa; George, an engineer on the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad, has his headquarters at Cologne, Minn.; Frank E., located at Peoria, Ill., is the agent for the northern half of Illinois for the Osborn Machine Company; Fred is a painter of Eureka, S. D.; Lester is fireman with his brother George on the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad; Julia is the wife of Timothy WILLIAMS, who is engaged in the grain business in Beaver Dam and owns a large elevator there; and Rhoda, who is the wife of William LABAREN, a business man of Osage, Iowa. Mr. RUSHLOW has always been in sympathy with the Democrat party, and his first presidential vote was cast for Gen. Zachary Taylor. He has filled various township offices and has served as a delegate to numerous conventions, but in the main has not been an office seeker. He is a member of the A.F. & A.M., in which he attained to the Royal Arch degree, and is a member of Beaver Dam Blue Lodge and Chapter. He also belongs to the I.O.O.F. Mrs. RUSHLOW is a member of the Beaver Dam Catholic Church, and is an earnest Christian in all ways. The RUSHLOWs are highly esteemed and have numerous warm friends. Submitted by Carol
