From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 213-214 RICHARD HINCHLIFF. A thrifty and enterprising farmer of Dodge County, Wis., is Richard HINCHLIFF, who owns a fine estate of 300 acres in Elby Township. He was born in Chenango County, N.Y., November 27, 1836, a son of William HINCHLIFF, who as born, reared and married in England, his wife being Elizabeth HUTLEY. Mr. HINCHLIFF was engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods and was an extensive and successful cotton factor of England. After coming to this country he resided for a time in Lowell, Mass., and in the City of Spindles continued his former occupation of cotton manufacturing. After a time he moved to Chenango County, N.Y., where he was engaged in the hotel business up to 1845, when he came West to Wisconsin and in July of that year located in Dodge County, entering and purchasing about 220 acres in Elby Township. A small board house had been previously erected on the place and in this rude dwelling his home continued to be while he was opening up and developing his farm. He afterward erected a more pretentious and substantial dwelling and good barns, sheds, etc., took the place of his other farm buildings. On this excellent estate he spent the last years of his life, dying January 1, 1861, at the age of seventy-four years, his wife having died twelve years earlier. Richard HINCHLIFF was one of three sons and two daughters that grew to mature years, the eldest of whom grew to manhood in England and afterward engaged in the drug business; Walter, who was engaged in the livery business, at Appleton, Wis., died in 1893; Joseph is a farmer of Dakota County, Wis.; Richard; Margaret, wife of Tracy HARRIS of Vermillion, Dakota County, and Mary J., wife of George HIGBY of Beaver Dam. Richard HINCHLIFF has been a resident of Dodge County, Wis., since he was eight years of age and he assisted his father in developing the home farm and after the latter's death took charge of the farm for some time, then became its owner, buying out the other heirs. For forty years he has given his attention to the management of this place and has shown that his judgment is of the soundest. He was married in Dodge County, January 20, 1869, to Miss Elizabeth VOKES, a native of New York and of English parentage. Her father, John VOKES, was one of the pioneers of Dodge County. Mrs. HICNLIFF was reared and educated here and her marriage has resulted in the birth of three children: Fred, who was educated in the common schools, a commercial college of Milwaukee and in Wayland University; Charles, who is also studying in Wayland University, and Adelaide E., who is now at home but who is also being educated in Wayland University. Mr. HINCHLIFF has always identified himself with the Republican party and his first presidential vote was cast for Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Socially he belongs to the A.F. & A.M. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and while he does not belong to any religious organization he believes in the doctrines of the church to which his wife belongs. He is accounted among the first citizens of the section in which he resides and numbers his friends by the score. Submitted by Carol
