From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 147-148 MATUREAL B. HALL. This prominent old citizen and retired farmer has been a resident of Dodge County, Wis., for fifty-three years, and during this time his walk through life has been characterized by the most upright business principles, by that "charity which thinketh no evil," by his desire to "do as he would be done by," and by the public spirit that has ever animated him. He was born in New Hampshire, March 22, 1809, a son of Rufus and Phoebe (BALLOU) HALL, the former of whom was born in Connecticut, but who reared his family in New Hampshire and Vermont, in which States he tilled the soil. Matureal B. HALL attained manhood in the Green Mountain State, and his early work was laying stone fences. He was married in Haverhill, N.H., to Miss Judith E. ROLLINS, a native of Oxford, N.H., and in 1841 came with his family to Dodge County, Wis., and took up a claim in Burnett Township. He broke the first prairie and built the first log house in that section, but afterward sold this claim, and bought land in Oak Grove Township, on which he built a substantial frame house, and in other ways began improving his farm. He remained there until 1860, when he sold out, moved to Trenton Township and purchased an improved place, which he farmed for a few years, in the mean time building a barn and residence thereon. He then moved to another farm in Burnett Township, and a few years later came to the place on which his son is now residing, and finally located in the village of Rolling Prairie, where he has a pretty and comfortable home. He has made his own way in life from first to last, and has well earned the rest which he is now enjoying. His wife was a daughter of David ROLLING and a sister of Mrs. Emily ELKINS, a sketch of whom appears in this volume. Mr. HALL was called upon to mourn the death of his wife in April 1889, and he with two sons and two daughters survives her. A. D. and Merrill R., are both substantial farmers of Burnett Township, and their sketches appear herein. Emily E., a daughter, married Edwin McGLASHAN, of Beaver Dam, and died leaving five children, and Ellen, another daughter, died in early childhood; Jane is the wife of William McNEAL; Nettie B. is the wife of Edward McCONNELL, a contractor and builder of Rolling Prairie. In politics Mr. HALL is a Democrat, and, although he has attained to the advanced age of eighty-six, he is quite a hale and vigorous old gentleman and his mind is still clear and active.
