WI BIO - Dodge Co - RUSHLOW, Louis History of Dodge County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, pp 685-686 Louis RUSHLOW, farmer, Sections 12 and 13, Calamus Township, P. O. Beaver Dam [Dodge County, Wisconsin], was born in 1827 in Clinton County, New York, a son of John B. RUSHLOW and Josephina MARTELL [her maiden name?], who were born in the district of Three Rivers, Lower Canada, but in 1814 were immigrants to Clinton County, New York. In 1832 he [Louis RUSHLOW] with his parents removed to the town of Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont, where they both died, John B. RUSHLOW in 1853 and Josephina RUSHLOW in 1871. When eleven years old [1838 or 1839] Louis RUSHLOW went to live with Mr. V. S. FERRIS, proprietor of a large flouring mill, at Swanton [Franklin County, Vermont]. He attended school for the first two winters, his teachers being the poet John G. SAXE and his brother; [p 686] when not in school, he was learning the miller's trade. Next he was a cook on board a steamer on Lake Champlain, and by 1846 he became quite a sailor, as well as cook and miller. Louis RUSHLOW was then employed by Mr. CATLIN, proprietor of the Catlin Mills, of Burlington [Chittenden County], Vermont, and also of a line of steamers on Lake Champlain. The first three years of his [Louis RUSHLOW's] stay at Burlington were in the mill, but the last six summers [thus he was in Burlington for about eight or nine years] he was Captain of a steamer on the lake for Mr. CATLIN, but spending the winters in the mill. In May 1855 S. P. K. LEWIS, of Beaver Dam [Dodge County], Wisconsin, came to Burlington [Vermont] and employed Mr. RUSHLOW to come to Wisconsin and take the position of miller in the mill at Beaver Dam, in whose employ Louis RUSHLOW remained fourteen years. In 1869 he [Louis RUSHLOW], with three partners, bought the Beaver Dam mill of E. R. HOYT, but he [Louis] soon sold his interest, and was employed as miller in the same mill until February 1873. He then went to Tomah [Monroe County], Wisconsin, and was employed as foreman in the mill of which Freeman & Runkle were proprietors. In November 1874 he returned to Beaver Dam [Dodge County], and was miller for S. P. K. Lewis & Sons until 1878. In 1877 Louis RUSHLOW bought a farm of twelve acres in Sections 12 and 13, town of Calamus, where he has devoted his attention to farming since he quit the mill. On 27 October 1849 at Burlington [Chittenden County], Vermont, he [Louis RUSHLOW] married Miss Aurelia [LAPEIRE], daughter of Basil and Margaret LAPEIRE, of Verchere, Lower Canada [now Verchere Township, located in the Montérégie region in the Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada]. They [Louis and Aurelia (LAPEIER) RUSHLOW] have had nine children: (1) Louis R., of Mitchell [Mitchell County], Iowa; (2) Juliette, now Mrs. F. F. WILLIAMS, also of Mitchell, Iowa; (3) George W.; (4) Rhoda, now Mrs. William E. LABARON, also of Mitchell, Iowa; (5) Fred S.; (6) Francis, deceased; (7) Francis E.; (8) Eugene, deceased; and (9) Lester J.
