ROSS, farmer, Section 14 [Calamus Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin, P. O. Beaver Dam [Beaver Dam Township], was born 29 June 1814 in Rosshire, Scotland, the third son of David and Helen ROSE, nee MONROE, was educated in the public school of his native county, and spent most of his early life with his parents on the farm. In the summer of 1840 he took passage at Assint, Scotland, on board the ship "Devron," on her voyage from Glasgow to the British Provinces, and landed at Pictou, Nova Scotia, 19 June [1840], stopping at Pictou for four years, where he was engaged in various kinds of business. In 1844 he went to Providence [Providence County], Rhode Island, and thence direct to Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, where for twelve years he was engaged in shipbuilding most of the time. He spent the winters of 1848-1849 and 1849-1850 in Mobile [Mobile County, Alabama] and New Orleans [New Orleans Parish, Louisiana], working at his trade. On 22 May 1855 he came to Dodge County, Wisconsin, and bought a farm of 200 acres in Section 14, town [township] of Calamus, which, by his own honest toil and industry, he has changed into a commodious home. In 1855 at Boston [Suffolk County, Massachusetts] he [Alexander D. ROSS] married Miss Christina, daughter of George and Elizabeth McKAY, of Nova Scotia. They [Alexander D. and Christina (McKAY) ROSS] have had eight children: (1) Helen, deceased; (2) Mary Ellen, deceased; (3) David W., (4) Eliza M., (5) George A., (6) Clara J., (7) Anna C., and (8) Ada B.
