Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, pp 611-612 Horatio ROPER, farmer, Section 24 [Oak Grove Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin], P. O. Juneau [Oak Grove Township], was born 01 January 1799 in Rutland, Worchester County, Massachusetts (near the old barracks where BURGOYNE, the British Commander, was stationed at the time of [p 612] the Revolutionary War), a son of John ROPER; his father's brother Ephriam's family [the family of Ephriam ROPER, who was a brother of John ROPER] was twice destroyed by the Indians, and after all he [Ephriam ROPER] married again and raised ten sons and one daughter. Horatio married, 23 November 1820, Anna REID, daughter of William REID of Sterling [Worcester County], Massachusetts. Their [Horatio and Anna (REID) ROPER's] children are: (1) Joseph W., now in Fort Dodge [Webster County], Iowa; (2) Samuel E., who was in Company K, 29th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and is now in Madison [Dane County], Wisconsin; (3) John H., who died in infancy; (4) John A., at home; (5) Josiah C., who is in Horicon [Hubbard Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin]; (6) Mary A., who is in Mankato [Blue Earth County], Minnesota; (7) Louisa L., living at home; and (8) Harriet, who died 22 April 1865 at the age of 22. After marriage, Horatio went to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, and then to Tioga County, New York. He came to Wisconsin and Oak Grove [Oak Grove Township, Dodge County] in 1849 [Wisconsin had become a State on 29 May 1848], and settled on a farm of eighty acres. John A. ROPER [Horatio's son] is now running the farm. On 23 April 1853 he [John A. ROPER] married Emeline TYLER [a maiden name?]. Their children [the children of John A. and Emeline ROPER] are: Stella, who died in infancy; Frank, who died when two years old; Dora, and Dena, who both died in infancy; and Belle, Mark, John, and Daisy, the last four named at home.
