ROOT, retired farmer, Fox Lake Village [Fox Lake Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin], was born 10 September 1827 in Portage, Allegany County, New York, son of Israel ROOT, who was born and brought up in Rensselaer County, New York. His [Israel ROOT's] father was also Israel ROOT, and was of old Connecticut stock, and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Israel ROOT, Jr. and family came to Milwaukee [Milwaukee County, Territory of Wisconsin] in May 1842, and soon after went to [that part of Milwaukee County that would become] Waukesha County [created from the western portion of Milwaukee County 31 January 1846]. In August 1842, they [Israel ROOT and his family] moved to the town [same thing as Township] of Beaver Dam [Dodge County, Territory of Wisconsin] and settled on 160 acres. Israel ROOT bought his land for ten shillings per acre, and after living there fifteen years, sold out for $50 per acre, and moved to Reedsburg [Sauk County, Wisconsin], and lived there until he [Israel ROOT, the father of the subject] died at the age of seventy-nine years. Lyman N. ROOT built the log house, which had two rooms, one more than usual. In those times Indians were numerous, and Lyman, becoming lost one night, camped out with them, returning in the morning. The nearest market was Milwaukee. There were but seven families in Beaver Dam, all living in shanties. On 05 February 1845 Lyman R. ROOT married Lydia HYDE [a maiden name?], of Allegany County, New York. They [Lyman R. and Lydia ROOT] had five children: (1) Charles M., who is in Minnesota; (2) Jeddu B., living in Iowa; (3) Emma J., who lives in Minnesota; (4) Julius M., who is a twin, lives in Cincinnati [Hamilton County, Ohio; and (5) Julia M., the twin of Julius M., who resides in Minnesota. Mrs. Lyman R. ROOT [Lydia R. ROOT] died 19 September 1855. On 23 December 1855 Lyman R. ROOT married Jane READ [a maiden name?] of Beaver Dam [Beaver Dam Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. He had two children by second wife [the children of Lyman R. and Jane ROOT being]: (1) Justin D., and (2) Elbert D. Mr. [Lyman R.] ROOT moved to Fox Lake [Fox Lake Township, Dodge County] in 1867, and settled on 150 acres, which he now owns. He has held all the different offices in the School Board, and was Justice of the Peace in Beaver Dam. Mr. ROOT was an old and well-known music teacher in old times. He taught in all the principal towns and villages in this part of the State. He is a member of the Temple of Honor and Good Templars, and the family are members of the Baptist Church.
