WI BIO - Dodge Co - ROBERTS, Robert W. History of Dodge County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, p 685 Robert W. ROBERTS, deceased; was the son of Robert ROGERS*, of Denbighshire, North Wales, and was born in May 1816, his mother dying when he was quite young. He was raised by his grandfather, and in the summer of 1849, he came to America and settled on a farm of 80 acres, in Section 30, town [Township] of Calamus [Dodge County, Wisconsin], which, by his own industry and toil he improved and increased to 133 acres in the same Section. On 25 December 1849 he [Robert W. ROBERTS] married Miss Mary [ROBERTS], daughter of David and Ann ROBERTS, of the town [Township] of Elba, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Miss Mary ROBERTS was born in Carnavonshire, North Wales, but in 1845 was an emigrant to Dodge County [Wisconsin]. Mr. [Robert W.] ROBERTS died 26 February 1875, leaving a widow [Mrs. Mary ROBERTS] with three children [issue of Robert W. and Mary (ROBERTS) ROBERTS] as follows: (1) Robert M.; (2) Ann, now Mrs. Edward P. ROBERTS, of Westford [Westford Township, Dodge County]; and (3) William D. They are members of the Welsh Methodist Episcopal Church. [* In some parts of Wales the custom of a son taking his father's first instead of his last name as his surname was practiced. Thus Robert W., son of Robert ROGERS, became Robert W. ROBERTS, not Robert W. ROGERS, as American naming custom would have dictated. In the Welsh tradition, Robert M., son of Robert ROBERTS, takes his father's first name (Robert) as his surname, and becomes Robert M. ROBERTS. By American custom, Robert M., son of Robert ROBERTS, takes the same surname as his father (ROBERTS) and still becomes Robert M. ROBERTS, but does so on the basis of a different custom of naming.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
