RIX, Sheriff of Dodge County, Juneau [Dodge County, Wisconsin], was born 12 July 1837 in Canada, son of John RIX, who was born in Vermont and came of old English stock. He [John RIX, the father] died about 1870, at the age of 59 years. He [John RIX] came with his family to Kenosha County, [Territory of] Wisconsin, in the spring of 1844, and in the spring of 1845, moved to Washington County, Wisconsin [Territory], and settled on 160 acres of Government land. He [John RIX, the father of the subject] was the father of seventeen children, of which six boys and six girls are now living. The old farm is still in possession of the boys. [The only children named are J. L. and John.] Mr. J. L. RIX started out for himself at the age of 21. He and his brother, John RIX [also the father's name] built a mill, and carried on the milling business successfully some years, until the spring of 1872, when he [J. L. RIX] came to Dodge County, Wisconsin [had become a State 29 May 1848], and engaged in the responsible position of Superintendent of the North-Western Iron Company's works at Mayville [Williamstown Township, Dodge County], and was there until elected Sheriff in 1878, which office he entered in 1879. In January 1863, he [J. L. RIX] married [Miss] Eliza E. MAXON, daughter of Ethan MAXON, who was from New York. The children [of J. L. and Eliza E. (MAXON) RIX] are (1) Frances; (2) Arthur, who died in infancy; (3) John; (4) George; (5) Ethan M., who died in infancy; (6) Mary P., and (7) Jennie. In 1871 Mr. [J. L.] RIX made a trip to Utah and Salt Lake. and was over most of that State, returning after being there six months. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
