WI BIO - Dodge Co - RICHMOND, Riley S. History of Dodge County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, pp 693-694 Riley S. RICHMOND, farmer, P. O. Randolph, was born 06 September 1827 in Monroe County, New York, son of Joshua and Abigail RICHMOND. He followed farming in Monroe County, New York, until 1847, and then emigrated to Wisconsin [the Territory of Wisconsin if before 29 May 1848, when the State was created] and settled in the town of Randolph, Columbia County, where he bought a farm of 200 acres in Sections 16 and 21 [Randolph Township, Columbia County], and made that his home until 1872. He [Riley S. RICHMOND] then bought four and a half acres of land in the West Ward of the village of Randolph [which is a border community, shown on 1878 maps of Dodge and Columbia Counties, Wisconsin, to be in both Westford Township in Dodge County, and in Courtland Township in Columbia County, but not extending into Randolph Township, Columbia County], where he now resides in a large, commodious house and enjoys the fruits of his many years of honest industry. [Submitter assumes that since this biography was placed in a history of Dodge County, the "West Ward" of which the author speaks was in Westford Township, Dodge County.] He spends his time in superintending his farms, which are three in number: (1) the one above named [Sections 16 and 21 in Randolph Township, Columbia County], (2) one of eighty-six acres in Section 34, town of Randolph, Columbia County; and (3) another of fifty acres in Section 33, town of Fox Lake, Dodge County. [Note that "town" and "Township" are used interchangeably and mean the same thing.] In 1854 he [Riley S. RICHMOND] married [his first wife] Miss Jane, daughter of Zenus and Caroline OLIVER, of Randolph Center [a community in Randolph Township], Columbia County, Wisconsin, by [p 694] whom he has one daughter, Eva I., Mrs. John S. LIGHTNER, of Randolph. Mrs. RICHMOND [the first wife of Riley S. RICHMOND, namely Jane (OLIVER) RICHMOND] died 13 August 1856. [Since the author does not give the county of Mrs. John S. LIGHTNER's residence or specify the "village" or "Township" of Randolph, then the submitter, if looking for a census record, for example, would expect to find Eva I. (RICHMOND) LIGHTNER in one of three places: (1) in Randolph, Westford Township, Dodge County; (2) in Randolph, Courtland Township, Columbia County; or (3) in Randolph Township, Columbia County.] On 04 February 1857 he [Riley S. RICHMOND] married [his second wife, who had the same given name as his first wife] Miss Jane, daughter of Thomas and Margaret HUGHES, of the town of Randolph [Randolph Township, Columbia County]. They [Riley S. and Jane (HUGHES) RICHMOND] have two children: (1) a son, Osro, deceased; and (2) a daughter, Cora B. Mr. [Riley S.] RICHMOND has been Justice of the Peace several times in the West Ward of the village [submitter assumes this ward was in Westford Township, Dodge County, although the western portion of the village of Randolph was in Courtland Township, Columbia County], and has also been a member of the Village Board. Mr. RICHMOND is a member of the Masonic Fraternity. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
