REHFELD, insurance and machine agent, Horicon [Dodge County, Wisconsin; mostly in Hubard Township but partly in Oak Grove Township on an 1878 Dodge County map], was born 31 August 1836 in Germany. In 1856 he came to America, settled in Hustisford [Hustisford Township, Dodge County]. He [C. W. REHFELD] worked at anything to which he could turn his hand until he enlisted, 22 November 1861, in the Sixteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth, was taken prisoner, held three weeks, paroled, and rejoined the regiment in February 1863. He re-enlisted on 03 January 1864 in the same regiment, was with SHERMAN on his famous "march to the sea" and also with him in the great march through the Carolinas. He witnessed the burning of Columbia, South Carolina [17 February 1865]. Mr. REHFELD was wounded at Bentonville, North Carolina, and was in a hospital in New York City about a year. He returned to Horicon, and now draws a Government pension. On 05 May 1867 he [C. W. REHFELD] married Miss Frederike HOCHSCHILD. They [C. W. and Frederike (HOCHSCHILD) REHFELD] have five children: Mary, Emil, Powell, Eddy, and Herman. Mr. [C. W.] REHFELD began his present business in 1867. Mr. REHFELD is agent for the Mechanics' and N. W. Insurance Companies, of Milwaukee. He also sells the Canada Singer sewing machines and farm machinery. Mr. REHFELD is a Democrat, has been Constable and Justice of the Peace, and is now Deputy Sheriff [Dodge County]. He is a member of Horicon Lodge, No. 87, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
