DANGEL, Peter Commemorative and Biographical Record of Columbia, Sauk and Adams Counties, WI. Chicago: Ogle, 1901, p 697-8 Peter DANGEL is a well-known citizen of Reedsburg [Sauk County, WI], who has achieved success in business through his own industry, perseverance and integrity of character. During his residence of over three years in that place he has established a reputaion among his associates, which justly entitles him to honorable mention in the annals of Sauk County. He is a native of Germany, born at Morlheim, Rhine province, 28 Oct 1834. His parents, Peter George and Barbara (LIND) DANGEL, were in humble circumstances and bequeathed him little more than a rugged constitution and an honest purpose to better his condition in life. They lived and died in the Fatherland, the former passing away in 1846 at the age of 42 years, while Mrs. DANGEL survived to the age of 60 years. While a boy Peter Dangel began to learn the miller's trade, at which he was employed in his native land about 11 years. In the meantime he spent two and one-half years in the German army, but as peace prevailed during that period, he was not called into actual hostilities. Believing that the U. S. offered better opportunities for capable and ambitous men, in 1860 he came to this country. He spent the next five or six years in the state of NY, being employed at his trade most of that time in Oswego and Syracuse. He then came to Reedsburg and for a dozen years operated the grsit mill at that place, which was then owned by S. MACKEY & Company. For the next three years he carried on a shoe store in conjunction with Paul BISHOP, to whom he sold his interest in the business at the end of that period. In 1880 he opened a meat maket, which he has since conducted with the exception of three years, during which time he rented the establishment. For a part of this interval he was employed as a bookkeeper and collector in the Reedsburg Brewery. The name of the present firm is Peter DANGEL & Son, and the procession of customers which is constantly filing in and out of their shop attests the excellent quality of the goods sold as well as the personal popularity of the proprietors. Mr. DANGEL was married 23 Feb 1865 to Dora PARAU, daughter of Mrs. Catharina PARAU, of Oswego [Oswego County], NY. Mrs. DANGEL was born at Barum, province of Hanover, Germany, and came to this country in 1864, her father having died in Germany. She died 01 Oct 1892 at the age of 44 years, and was buried from St. Peter's Lutheran church, of which she was a devout member. She was the mother of five children, three of whom survive to revere her memory: Louise (died at the age of 19 years), William (died when an infant), Louis is one of of the partners composing the STOLTE, DANGEL & FOSS Company, one of the leading mercantile establishments of Sauk County), Peter H. (is his father's partner), and Gustave E. (is a member of the drug firm of MUELLER & DANGEL, Reedsburg). On 11 Jul 1896, Mr. [p 698] DANGEL was married to Mrs. Hannah BRIGGS, widow of Oscar BRIGGS, of Reedsburg [Sauk County, WI], and a native of Hanover, Germany. Since becoming a citizen of the U. S. Mr. DANGEL has affiliated with the Democratic party. In recognition of his interest in the affairs of the city he has been repeatedly chosen to fill responsible public positions. For two years he was assessor of the city and served fifteen years as alderman of the first ward, being a member of the city council longer than any other citizen. He took an active interest in securing the incorporation of the city and the establishment of its admirable system of water works, which has been the source of envy and emulation on the part of many neighboring towns.
