WI BIO - Dane Co - WHEELWRIGHT, William S. Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol I, pp 153-154 William S. WHEELWRIGHT, M. D., prominent among the medical profession of Belleville [Dane County, Wisconsin], who has made this city his home since June 1878, when he located within its borders, was born in Ohio, 18 December 1851, a son of David and Jane (SIMMONS) WHEELWRIGHT, natives of England. The father [David] came to the United States when he was twenty-one years of age, and the mother [Jane] emigrated to this country with her parents when a small child. The father of our subject [David WHEELWRIGHT] located in Ohio upon his arrival in this country, and it was in this State [OH] that he was married. In 1854 he [David] removed to Wisconsin, settling in Middleton, Dane County, where he remained until 1865, tilling the soil. At that date he [David WHEELWRIGHT] removed to Vernon County, Wisconsin, where he settled in the town of Frost, remaining until his death. After his demise the mother came to Belleville [Dane County, WI] and made her [p 154] home with our subject [William S.], but died in Iowa [probably means the state of Iowa, although there is an Iowa County in WI] while on a visit to a daughter. She [Jane nee SIMMONS] had borne her husband [David WHEELWRIGHT] eleven children, of whom nine grew to maturity, namely: (1) Sarah, who married Daniel GARFIELD, resides in Dawes County, Nebraska; (2) our subject [William S.]; (3) Hattie, who married William T. MARKEE, resides in Toledo [Tama County], Iowa; (4) Ruth, who married James H. UNDERWOOD, resides in Nebraska, but is now attending medical college at Iowa City [Johnson County], Iowa; (5) Ella, who married Henry PEPPER, resides in Elroy [Juneau County], Wisconsin; (6) Daniel W., is a physician of Lake View [Sac County], Iowa; (7) Thomas S., is a wagon maker in Chicago [Cook County, IL]; (8) Sidney, is a student of Toledo [Tama County, IA?]; and (9) Nellie, is in Omaha [Sarpy or Douglas County?], Nebraska. The early life of our subject [William S.] was passed on the farm, he receiving his early education in the district schools of the neighborhood. His medical studies were commenced under Dr. A. A. ROWLEY, of Middleton [Dane County, WI], and later he attended Rush Medical College, at Chicago, graduating in the class of 1878. Immediately after graduation he located at Belleville [Dane County, WI], where he has since remained. In the spring of 1878 he [William S. WHEELWRIGHT] married Miss Lulu ROWLEY, daughter of N. C. and Sarah ROWLEY, born at Verona, Dane County, Wisconsin. Three children have been born to Dr. William S. and Lulu (ROWLEY) WHEELWRIGHT, namely: E. Maurine, William Orville, and Vivian R. Professional duties engross the Doctor's attention to such an extent that he only takes sufficient interest in political matters to case his ballot for the candidates nominated by the Republican party. Socially, he affiliates with Belleville Lodge, No. 74, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in which he has passed all the chairs, and he is also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Both professionally and socially, Dr. WHEELWRIGHT is popular, and deservedly so, for his constant endeavor is to faithfully perform every duty as it is presented to him. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
