WI BIO - Dane Co - WALLACE, Francis E. Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol II, pp 454-455 Francis E. WALLACE, a farmer and resident of Fitchburg [Dane County], Wisconsin, was born in Colerain [Coleraine, sometimes spelled Colrain, was established in 1761], Franklin County [created 24 June 1811 from Hampshire County, MA], Massachusetts, on 22 October 1832. His father, Zebina WALLACE, was born in the same town [Coleraine/Colrain], and his [Francis E.'s] grandfather, Seth WALLACE, was born in the town of Leyden in the same county. [Seth WALLACE, the grandfather of Francis E., was probably born in Franklin County, MA, when it was still part of Hampshire County, MA.] The great grandfather of our subject was also named Seth WALLACE, and as far as known was a native of the same state [MA] and of Scotch-Irish ancestry. He was a farmer and spent his last years in the town of Leyden. [Leyden established in 1754, when Franklin County was part of Hampshire County; Hampshire County, MA, was created in 1662. Assuming the great grandfather, Seth WALLACE, died in the same county where he was residing, he would have died in Hampshire County, MA, if his death occurred before 24 June 1811, and in Franklin County, MA, if he died on or after that date.] The grandfather of our subject [Seth WALLACE] moved to the town of Coleraine/Colrain, where he purchased a farm and paid for it with a half bushel of silver dollars. After living there many years he went to Wayne County, New York, spending his last years with his son Samuel in that county. The maiden name of his [Seth's] wife was Miss HULBURT, also a native of Massachusetts. She reared eight children, namely: James, Samuel, Seth, Zebina [father of Francis E.], Thompson, Ann, Esther, Susan, and Mary. [Note there are nine names given for the eight children.] The father of our subject [Zebina WALLACE] learned the trade of tanner and shoemaker, which he followed in Coleraine/Colrain until 1840, then removed to Halfax [Windham County], Vermont, where he followed his trade until 1858, then came to Wisconsin, where he [Zebina WALLACE] purchased a farm in the town of Fitchburg [Dane County] and engaged in farming until his death. The maiden name of the mother of our subject [the wife of Zebina WALLACE] was Lucinda FRENCH, born in Halifax [Windham County], Vermont, and her parents were Ebenezer and Sally (WALKUP) FRENCH, natives of Seekonk [Bristol County], Massachusetts, pioneers of the town of Halifax [Windham County] Vermont, where they spent their last years. The mother of our subject [Lucinda (FRENCH) WALLACE] spent her last years on the farm in Fitchburg [Dane County, in the Territory of Wisconsin if she died before 29 May 1848, state of Wisconsin if she died on or after that date]. She [Lucinda (FRENCH) WALLACE] reared nine sons, namely: William, Christopher, DeWitt, Clinton, Jonathan Childs, Francis E., Zebina, Washington I., Henry Clay, and Joseph W. [Note that ten names are given for the nine children.] Zebina and Henry are dead. At the age of ten years [about 1842] our subject went to live with his paternal grandparents [Seth and ----- (HULBURT) WALLACE]. He [Francis E.] attended school part of the time and the remainder of the time assisted on the farm [p 455] until he was fourteen [about 1846], then started out and ever afterward cared for himself. He went to Brattleboro [Windham County, VT], where he was employed in an hotel for eighteen months, then went to Hartford [Hartford County], Connecticut, where he was employed in a restaurant for six months, and then went to Boston [Suffolk County, MA], where he drove a bread wagon, selling the staff of life to the Bostonians. He resided there until 1853, when he [Francis E. WALLACE] took a trip to Australia, sailing from Boston 19 January [1853], landing at Melbourne 07 June [1853]. He went to Bendigo, a few miles out from Melbourne and there engaged in mining, remaining five years; returning via London he finally landed in New York. He visited in Vermont a few months and then came to Wisconsin. For several months he was employed in an hotel at Madison [Dane County, WI], then located in Fitchburg, where he engaged in farming, and in 1871 located on the farm he now owns and occupies. In 1864 he [Francis E. WARREN] was married to Catherine FARRELL [maiden name?], born in Ireland, who came to America when young. They have four children, namely: Francis, Joseph W., Hall Z., and Amanda. He [Francis E.] has been identified with the Republican party since its formation. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
