WI BIO - Dane Co - TURK, James History of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, p 1264 James TURK, a retired farmer, of Black Earth, Dane County, Wisconsin, was born in County Kent, England in 1811. James TURK was married to Ann ASHTOWN, born in Sussex County, the same year [1811]. He came to New York in the summer of 1850, and to the town of Black Earth [Dane County, Wisconsin] in the fall of the same year. Mr. [James] TURK served an apprenticeship to the trade of a miller in England. He ground the first grist ground at the Black Earth Mill [Black Earth, Dane County, WI]. He was employed as a miller at this mill for several years, and then settled on a farm on section 23, and located where he now lives, near the village, in 1868. James TURK has had eleven children, seven of whom are living: (1) Elizabeth, (2) Ann, (3) Harriet, (4) Jane, (5) Charles, (6) James S., and (7) John. Two sons, (8) William and (9) Alfred, were soldiers in the war of the rebellion, belonging to Company A, Eleventh Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. William was killed in battle, and Alfred died of disease while in the service. (10) Eliza, afterward Mrs. George WHEELER, died at Litchfield [Litchfield County], Connecticut.
