TOWNSEND, of Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin, was born in Pelham Township, Westchester County, New York, 16 September 1841, a son of James L. and Sarah (DEDERER) TOWNSEND, natives of the same county. They emigrated to Cambridge, Dane County, Wisconsin, in 1850. James H., the youngest living son, attended school until seventeen years of age. One year later, in 1860, he went overland to California, returning in 1863. James H. TOWNSEND was united in marriage, 09 September 1868, to Miss Jenny DOW, a native of Jefferson County [Wisconsin], and a daughter of George and Janet DOW, of Cambridge [Dane County], Wisconsin. They [James H. and Jenny (DOW) TOWNSEND] have had four children: Joan, Sarah Elizabeth (deceased in infancy), Isa Gavina, and Georgia Dow.
