WI BIO - Dane Co - SCHLOTTHAUER, Oscar Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol II, pp 313-314 Oscar SCHLOTTHAUER, the County Clerk of Dane County, Wisconsin, has been a resident of Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, all his life, having been born her about thirty-three years ago, and was educated in the private and public schools of the city. Later in life he became a railroad postal clerk, running from Chicago [Cook County, Illinois] to Winona [Winona County], Minnesota [just across the Mississippi River from Trempealeau County, Wisconsin]. After his father's death he assumed the management of his business until he was elected County Clerk. The father of our subject was a native of Hesse-Cassel, Germany, and was named George. He came to the United States in 1850, when he was about twenty-six years of age. He spent two years in New York City, when he removed to New Orleans, where he resided about four nears; then he [George SCHLOTTHAUER] married and came to Madison [Dane County, WI] and remained here until his death, which occurred in 1886. His wife, who is yet living, was Miss Gertrude [p 314] BACHEM, born in the Rhine province, Prussia, and came to the United States in 1855. One year later she married and removed to Madison, where she has since made her home, and where she and her husband were well-known German residents. Our subject [Oscar] is he second of three sons born to these parents [George and Gertrude (BACHEM) SCHLOTTHAUER], of whom one, August, the oldest, died in 1876. The other son, Julius, is manager of the Lake City House in Madison. Our subject [Oscar] is a strong and active Democrat, and has always exerted himself for the cause of the party and for the good of Madison. As a reward for his industry he was elected County Clerk in 1890, and re-elected in 1892, and has filled the position in a very satisfactory manner to all parties. Mr. [Oscar] SCHLOTTHAUER is very social in his nature and is a charter member of the Lake City Gun Club, and is very fond of hunting and fishing. He has never married, but as he is yet a young man his friends hope to be introduced to a Mrs. SCHLOTTHAUER before many years have gone by. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
