WI BIO - Dane Co - ROOD, John Q. A. Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol II, p 501 John Q. A. [Quincy Adams?] ROOD, a successful farmer of Dane County, Wisconsin, was born in Washington County, Vermont, 22 May 1825, a son of Moses and Edith (ROBINSON) ROOD, also natives of Vermont. The father [Moses ROOD], a farmer and lumberman by occupation, died in Wisconsin in 1854, and the mother [Edith nee ROBINSON] died in Wisconsin in 1862. They [Moses and Edith (ROBINSON) ROOD were the parents of eight children, six sons and two daughters, all but one of whom lived to years of maturity. John Q. A. ROOD, the subject of this sketch, came to [the Territory of] Wisconsin in 1845, locating in Janesville, Rock County. Three years later he went to Stoughton [Dane County; in the Territory of Wisconsin if he came there before 29 May 1848; in the State of Wisconsin if he came 29 May 1848 or after], where he and his brother built the mill dam across the [Rock] river; remained there two years; then at Waterloo [Jefferson County], Wisconsin, until 1852; in that year went West with ox teams, being from April until September in making the trip, and took up a tract of land in Willamette valley [Multnomah County], Oregon. He [John Q. A. ROOD] was engaged in mining in that State seven years, and in 1858 returned to Waterloo, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, where he followed the lumber business four years. [The lumber business in WI grew along with the development of railroads, since wood was required for railroad ties and as fuel for locomotives, as well as for heating the homes and cooking the food of an increasing number of settlers.] In 1865 Mr. ROOD bought his present farm of 140 acres in Dunkirk Township, Dane County [WI], where he has since been engaged in general farming. In June 1852, he [John Q. A. ROOD] was united in marriage with Mary E. ESTES, who was reared in North Carolina, and they have one child, Harriet E., wife of William TYLER, of Dunkirk Township, Dane County, Wisconsin. Politically Mr. ROOD affiliates with the Republican party, and has held the office of Township Supervisor two years. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
