ROE - p 597 [brother of Ole K.] Halleck K. ROE, a successful farmer of Dane County [Wisconsin], was born on section 22, Pleasant Springs Township, Dane County [Territory of Wisconsin], 10 December 1847, a son of Knudt and Anna (JOHNSON) HALLECKSON, both born and reared in Norway. In 1840 they [Knudt and Anna] left their native country for the United States, locating first in LaSalle County, Illinois, three years afterward went to Racine County, Wisconsin, and the following year, in 1844, came to Dane County, this State [Wisconsin became a state 29 May 1848]. They were the parents of two sons and five daughters. The father [Knudt HALLECKSON] died in 1873, and the mother still resides on the old homestead, aged seventy-five years. Halleck K. ROE received but few educational advantages, and in early life began work on the farm. After the father's death the estate was divided between the two sons, our subject, being the eldest, received 160 acres of land, and his brother 120 acres. Mr. [Halleck K.] ROE takes no interest in politics, but votes with the Republican party. Religiously he is a member of the Lutheran Church. Biography of Ole K. ROE - p 450 [brother of Halleck K.] Ole K. ROE, of Stoughton, Dane County [WI], was born in Pleasant Springs Township, Dane County [WI], 24 August 1851, a son of Knud [Knudt?] and Anna (JOHNSON) ROE, natives of Tellemarken [Telemark fylke], Norway. The parents came to America in 1839, locating in LaSalle County, Illinois, two years afterward removed to Racine County, Wisconsin, and in 1843 bought a tract of Government land in Dane County [Territory of Wisconsin]. The father was a great hunter, having hunted for bear in the old country, and deer in America. He had the first ox team in the neighborhood, with which he was obliged to go to Milwaukee to mill and market, and his neighbors all borrowed the oxen for the same purpose. Mr. [Knud] ROE died in 1874 and his widow [Anna (JOHNSON) ROE] still resides on the old homestead, aged seventy-five years. They were the parents of ten children, our subject [Ole K.] being the fourth child, and five daughters and two sons are now living. Ole K., the subject of this sketch, assisted his father on his farm of 280 acres, and in 1873 began life for himself on 160 acres of land. His sister, now Mrs. THORSON, kept house for him for three years. On 09 April 1888, he leased his farm and came to Stoughton [Dane County, WI], where he has one of the finest residences in the county, built in 1891. For 20 years Mr. ROE has been engaged in the tobacco business, and now handles over two thousand cases annually. He votes with the Republican party, but takes no active interest in politics. In 1884 he was elected Treasurer of Pleasant Springs Township [Dane County, WI], and in 1890 was elected Alderman of the 2nd Ward of Stoughton. He is treasurer of the Stoughton Driving Park Association, is a lover of fine horses, and is the owner of a number of blooded animals. Mr. [Ole K.] ROE was married on 26 December 1875 to Lena FELLAND, who was born and reared in Pleasant Springs Township, Dane County [WI], and is a daughter of Ole FELLAND, a farmer of section 24, this township. To this union has been born four children, two now living: Carl A., born 15 May 1877; and Gustave, [born] 01 October 1881. Mr. ROE is a member of the Lutheran Church. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
