Frederick LUCHSINGER, proprietor of Belleville mills, and a prominent farmer 
of Dane County, WI, who became a resident of the county in 1885, and was born 
in Philadelphia, PA, 14 Mar 1847, being a son of John and Barbara (WILD) 
LUCHSINGER, who were natives of Switzerland, where they were married, and in 
1845 came to the U. S., first locating in Syracuse [Onondaga County], NY, 
later locating at Philadelphia until 1856, when he came to WI, settling in 
New Glarus Township, Green County, and there the parents of our subject 
passed their days, the father dying in 1863, at the age of fifty-two, and the 
mother in 1868, aged fifty-eight.

The father by occupation was a stonemason, a trade which he followed during 
life, although he became the owner of 200 acres of land. Both parents were 
members of the German Reformed Church. They reared a family of nine 
children, eight of whom grew to maturity: (1) Nicholas is a fruit grower in 
NJ, located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, although he did not 
leave WI until 1892; (2) Ursula married George DITTMAN, and resides in 
Philadelphia [PA]; (3) Sabilla married John RITTER, of Philadelphia; (4) 
Samuel became a CA fruit grower, and resides in San Jose [Santa Clara County, 
CA]; (5) John is a lawyer of Monroe [Green County], WI; (6) Barbara married 
Jacob BURGY*, and resides in Washington, Green County, WI; (7) Catherine 
married Mathias SUESSY* of New Glarus [Green County], WI; and (8) Frederick, 
our subject.

Our subject was but nine years of age when the family came to WI, and he 
there assisted on the farm, and attended the common schools. Frederick 
LUCHSINGER was married in 1869 to Miss Magdelena DUERST, daughter of John H. 
and Barbara DUERST, born in New Glarus [Green County], WI, in 1852, her 
parents having settled in 1847 in Green County. After marriage Frederick 
LUCHSINGER became the owner of the home farm of 293 acres, and tilled it 
until he came to Belleville [Dane County, WI], and in the fall of 1891 he 
purchased the Belleville mills. However, he still owns his farm in Green 
County [WI]. The mills of which our subject is the proprietor form one of 
the most valuable industries of the place.

Frederick and Magdelena (DUERST*) LUCHSINGER* have had a family of nine 
children: Barbara; John, a telegraph operator; Fred, Robert, Magie, Carrie, 
Mary, Daisy, and Minnie. In politics Frederick LUCHSINGER is a Republican, 
and is a Supervisor of Belleville. In his religious connections he is a 
member of the German Reformed Church. [* Submitter is familiar with the 
vital records of Green County, WI, and Canton Glarus, Switzerland. The 
surname "SUESSEY" in this biography should probably be "STEUSSY," or less 
commonly, "STEUSSI." The name "DUERST" sometimes appears in Green County 
obituaries as "DURST." "LUCHSINGER" is also spelled "LUCKSINGER." "BURGY" 
may also be spelled "BURGI" in Swiss records. Submitter is not directly
