LADD, County Treasurer of Dane County, WI, was born in Sogn Bergenstift [Hordaland flyke], Norway, 30 Sep 1832, a son of Erick J. and Carry (LUDWIG) LADD, also natives of Norway. The family are noted for their longevity, the maternal grandmother of our subject having lived to the age of 99 years. Carry (LUDWIG) LADD, the mother, died at Stoughton [Dane County, WI], in 1887, aged 94 years. Erick J. LADD, the father, a farmer by occupation, came to the U. S. in 1852. Erick E. LADD, the fifth of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, was educated in the common schools of Norway, and came to America at the age of twenty years. In 1852 he went to Janesville [Rock County, WI], where he was employed in hauling wood, receiving [p 341] 25 cents per cord, and furnished his own oxen; then worked in Caledonia [Racine County], WI, twenty-two months; and next was successfully engaged in lumbering. In 1856 Erick E. LADD bought his farm of 140 acres, where he has made many improvements, and he now makes a specialty of the raising of tobacco and livestock. While living on his farm he was severely injured by a runaway team, for which he was disabled eight weeks. Politically our subject affiliates with the Democratic party, and in 1890 was elected County Treasurer of Dane County, WI, by a majority of 1,100 votes. He was re-elected in 1892, with 706 majority, the largest in the county. Religiously he is a member of the Lutheran Church at Stoughton. Erick E. LADD was married 02 Feb 1856 to Bertie NELSON, a native of Bergen [Hordaland flyke], Norway, who came to America at the age of twenty-five years. They have had six children: (1) Bertha Maria, wife of Hans IVERSON; (2) Carrie, now Mrs. B. K. FORTAN; (3) Susan, wife of A. J. LILLISAND; (4) Julia, wife of Andrew THOMPSON; (5) E. N., of St. Paul, MN; and (6) Nelson A., Deputy County Treasurer. They also lost one child in infancy. Mr. LADD has served as a judge of tobacco in Stoughton [Dane County, WI] and Edgerton [Rock County, WI], owns two good residences in Stoughton, and is one of Dane County's reliable citizens.
