WI BIO - Dane Co - HUDSON, Charles Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol II, pp 355-356 Charles HUDSON, a prominent merchant of Westport, Dane County, WI, was born in Leicestershire, England, in 1833. His father, William HUDSON, a merchant of the same place, died when his son was a small child. The mother of our subject was Eliza TAYLOR, a native of the same place as her husband, and the daughter of William TAYLOR, also a merchant. After the death of her first husband, Mrs. HUDSON married again, and her second husband was James CLARKE, of Leicestershire. In 1856 Mrs. CLARKE came to America and settled in Dane County, WI, with her daughter, Mrs. Richard POINER, where she died in 1889, aged seventy years. By her first husband, Mrs. CLARKE had two children, Charles (our subject), and Mrs. POINER, whose Christian name was Rosanna. By her second marriage she had two sons, James and Alfred. Charles HUDSON was reared to his father's business, and in May 1860 came directly to Dane County, WI, upon arrival in America. One year after arrival here he commenced a small business at Leicester post office, where he became the Postmaster in the course of three or four years, and continued to hold that position [p 356] for about twenty years, until another was put in his place early in the administration of Grover CLEVELAND. Charles HUDSON, with a partner, A. P. GOODCLAP, in 1879, built a store in Leicester, but in 1871 or 1872 they removed it to this place [Westport, Dane County, WI], where they started the second store. Charles HUDSON dissolved partnership in 1873, and has since continued alone. His general merchandise business includes drugs and medicines. When Charles HUDSON came to America, he was accompanied by his wife, formerly Sarah OSBORNE, daughter of John OSBORNE, and one child, Eliza, which afterward died, at the age of six years. Charles and Sarah (OSBORNE) HUDSON have two living children: Charles William, a single man at home in the store; and Fred O., who married Johanna STUFFEL, daughter of Joseph STUFFEL, and has one child, Harry, a bright pleasing little fellow of three years, the pet of his grandparents. Charles HUDSON served as Justice of the Peace for one term. He is a worthy, good citizen, and enjoys the respect and esteem of all who whom him. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
