CHARLES M. HOWE was born at Woodstock, Vt., August 4, 
1828. In 1845 he went to sea and made a voyage around the 
world. In 1856 he married and came to Rock county, where 
he lived on a farm for five years. From 1861 to 1867 he 
kept a grocery store, first in Fulton and then in 
Stoughton. In 1867 he moved to Mazomanie, where he kept a 
general store until 1882, when he moved to Mellette, S. D. 
He owns a farm of 5,000 acres there, and also handles coal 
and buys wheat. Mrs. Howe died in 1899, and their daughter 
Fannie in 1890. The son--Frank Howe--lives at Mellette.
