HICKS, a farmer of Dane County, WI, was born in Dovershire, England, 29 May 1842, a son of John and Mary Ann (FINCH) HICKS, both born and reared in England. John B., the eldest of four sons and four daughters, was taken by his parents to Canada at the age of two years, where he received a good practical education. At the age of eighteen years, in 1860, he came with his parents to WI, locating in Waukesha County. John B. HICKS immediately secured a position in the Empire mills of Milwaukee, WI, having learned the trade from his father, where he was engaged until 02 Aug 1864, with the exception of a brief period spent at Barton [County], WI. In 1864 John B. HICKS enlisted in the late war, in Company H, 6th WI Volunteer Infantry, which formed a part of the famous Iron Brigade, or the 5th Army Corps. The regiment participated in the second battle of Hatcher's Run and Appomattox Court House, and after the close of the war was mustered out of service at Madison, WI. John B. HICKS then returned to the home of his parents in Mapleton, Waukesha County, WI, next spent three years at his trade in Delafield, Waukesha County, WI, employed two years in a mill in MI, worked in Colonel [p 584] SAWYER's mill at Milwaukee, WI, until 1878, and in that year came to Mazo Manie [Mazomanie], Dane County, WI. He was immediately installed as Superintendent of the mills of this city, and in 1883 purchased a one-fourth interest in the company. In 1890 he sold his interest to Bronson & Draper. John B. HICKS owns a fine fertile farm in this township, located within a mile of the incorporate limits of this city. He votes with the Republican party, has served as Alderman of Mazomanie for some time, and has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mr. TAYLOR, as a member of the County Board of Supervisors. Socially he is a member of the G. A. R. On 17 May 1870, John B. HICKS was united in marriage with Margaret Jane KEARNEY, a native of Canada. John B. and Margaret Jane (KEARNEY) HICKS have had nine children: Clarence, George, Mary, Lizzie (deceased), Alice, Mollie (deceased), Frank, John, and Clyde. Mr. and Mrs. John B. HICKS are members of the Catholic Church, although Mr. HICKS was reared as an Episcopalian. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
