WI BIO - Dane Co - GROSS, Frank Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol I, pp 139-140 Frank GROSS was born in Germany on 02 Apr 1819. In 1848 he came by sail vessel to the U. S., having spent 32 days on the ocean. After landing in NY he immediately began work at the wagon maker's trade in Rochester [Monroe County], NY, where he remained nine years, and then in 1857 came to Dane County, WI. During that time he saved $1,000, and after coming to Dane County, he bought 80 acres of land in Sun Prairie Township, Dane County, WI, for which he paid $600. Two years later he sold this land for $900, bought 80 acres for $1,200, of which he improved 50 acres, and then purchased 80 acres of his present farm. He afterward added to the last purchase until he owns 160 acres. Frank GROSS was married to Ann WERTH, who was born in Prussia, Germany, [p 140] in 1825, and came to this country with three sisters. Both her parents are now deceased. Frank and Ann GROSS have had seven children: (1) Nicholas, a farmer of Dakota; (2) Frank, of the same place; (3) Margaret, deceased; (4) John, at home; (5) Thelka, of St. Agnes [Fond du Lac County], WI; (6) Albian, a farmer of Dane County, WI; and (7) Peter, at home. Politically the family are identified with the Democratic party, and religiously, are members of the St. Joseph Catholic Church at East Bristol [Dane County], WI. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
