Co. 1893, Vol I, pp 250-251 Dr. William Wesley GILL, a physician and surgeon of Madison, Dane County, WI, was born in this city on 16 Feb 1860, a son of William John and Hannah (LANTRY) GILL, the former a native of Ferrens Point, on the St. Lawrence River, Canada, and the latter of eastern NY. William John GILL, a railroad contractor by occupation, assisted in the building of the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad from Madison to Sun Prairie, Dane County, WI, also a section of the Ogdensburg railroad in NY. William John GILL died about 26 years ago [about 1867], and the mother now resides in Madison, WI. William John and Hannah (LANTRY) GILL had three sons and three daughters, of whom William Wesley GILL is fourth in order of birth. The sons are connected with railroads in the West and [p 251] and Northwest; Hannah (LANTRY) GILL's brothers were also railroad contractors. William Wesley GILL attended the public schools of Madison, WI, until 17 years of age, and then began in the stock business and freighting over the west and northwest of TX. Three years later he returned to WI, and in 1881 entered the University of WI, where he remained one and a half years. He was then in Rush Medical College, Chicago, IL, until his graduation in 1883, and the following year began practice in Madison, WI, being first on the police force and fire department. During that year he also began the general practice of medicine. William Wesley GILL graduated at the law school of WI in the class of 1887. In 1890, in company with Dr. J. M. BOYD, he erected the Madison Hospital, at the cost of $17,000, which is one of the great enterprises of the city. Since that time he has confined his practice to surgery. William Wesley GILL is a Republican in his political views, and has held the office of Health Officer of the city and Pension Examiner of the Government.
