GARTON, a prominent resident of Rutland [Dane County], WI, was born in Norwich, Chenango County, NY, 25 Jun 1833. His father, John GARTON, was born in Yorkshire, England, and his grandparents were natives of England, who spent their entire lives there. Four of their children came to America: William, Mary, Martha, and John, the father of our subject. John GARTON was reared on the farm in his native shire until his marriage, when he came to America, accompanied by his bride, and joined his brother, William GARTON, at Vernon, Oneida County, NY. William GARTON conducted a flour mill there, and John GARTON entered his employment and learned the trade of miller, rented from him three years, then rented a flour mill for a time, later bought a mill four miles from Norwich [Chenango County], NY, which he operated a few years, and then on account of ill health, sold and bought a farm near Versalia [?], where he resided until 1843, when he emigrated to [the Territory of] WI. John GARTON traded his farm for a tract of land on the line of Rock and Walworth Counties, WI, and there he built, improved the land and resided there a few years, then sold and came to Dane County, WI, settling on the farm where our subject now lives, and where John GARTON died on 25 Feb 1883, at the age of 92 years. The maiden name of the wife of John GARTON (the mother of Andrew C. GARTON) was Rachel HOSTLER, born in Yorkshire, England, who died on 02 Apr 1888. Both parents were tenderly cared for during the last days of their lives in the family of our subject. John and Rachel (HOSTLER) GARTON reared six children. The married names of the daughters are: Rachel J. SPURR, [p 301] Mary A. WELCH, Martha DUNBAR, Elizabeth HALL, and Dorothy FOSTER. Andrew C. GARTON was the third child and only son, and was only 10 years of age when he came to the Territory of WI with his parents. The removal was made by the Erie Canal and lakes to Milwaukee, WI, thence overland to Walworth County. At that time the Territory of WI had but few inhabitants. Much of the land was owned by the Government, and was for sale at $1.25 per acre. Andrew C. GARTON resided with his parents until his marriage, and then located in Jefferson County, WI, where he rented land for a few years, then came to Dane County, WI, and in 1877 settled on the homestead, which he now owns and occupies. His farm has 120 acres. He was erected good frame buildings and made other improvements. Andrew C. GARTON, enlisted in Feb 1865 in Company H, 47th WI Regiment, and served until 01 Sep 1865, when he was honorably discharged and returned home. He is a Republican in politics. Andrew C. GARTON was married 28 Jan 1851 to Catherine GREEN, born in NY, 11 Oct 1833. Her father, Caleb GREEN, was a native of NY, a son of Jehiel and Esther GREEN. Jehiel GREEN moved to Medina County, OH, from NY, and spent his last years in LaFayette Township, Medina County, OH. He had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War; was a chair maker by trade, and when he removed to Medina County, OH, he was one of the pioneers of LaFayette Township. At that time that section of country was a wilderness, and deer, bear, and other kinds of game were plentiful. Jehiel GREEN traded his team for 17 acres of land, which he occupied for a time, then bought a larger tract, upon which he resided until 1849, then came to WI, via railroad and lake to Milwaukee, WI, and team to Waukesha County, WI. He stopped there a short time, then removed to Henry County, IL. He had received a warrant of land for services in the War of 1812, and with that he secured 160 acres of land in Henry County, IL. Here Jehiel GREEN built a log house, lived for two years, then moved to Jefferson County, WI, bought a tract of heavily timbered land, cleared a farm, and resided there until his death, 29 Jul 1855. The maiden name of the mother of Mrs. GARTON [who was Mrs. Caleb GREEN] was Catherine CLAUSEN; she was born in NJ, of Holland ancestry, and died in 1882. Andrew C. and Catherine (GREEN) GARTON had a family of seven children: Jennie, Oscar, Elmer and Edwin are still living. Henry H. died at the age of 26 years; David E., died at the age of four years and three months; Charles died in infancy. Jennie GARTON married George INGLES, and lives in Marshfield [Wood County], WI, has two children, Clayton and Hazel. Oscar GARTON married Ella SMITH, resides eight miles from Eau Claire [Eau Clarie] County, WI, and has seven children (William, George, Burt, Charlie, Roy, David, and an infant). Elmer GARTON married Nellie WILLARD, and lives in Rutland [Dane County], WI, and has three children (Jennie, Sylvia, and Berl). Edwin GARTON resides at home. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
