DELAPLAINE, a native of Philadelphia, PA, son of Joseph and Jane Ann DELAPLAINE, came to Milwaukee, WI, in Dec 1835, accompanied by Captain Garret VLIET, a U. S. Engineer, who during 1836 subdivided into sections Government lands situated in the land district of Milwaukee. George P. DELAPLAINE settled in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County], WI, and during 1837 had charge of the mercantile business of Solomon JUNEAU, an early pioneer of that locality, agent of the American Fur Company. In Jun 1838, George P. DELAPLAINE moved to Madison [Dane County], WI, and became secretary to the U. S. Commissioners of Public Buildings, who were then constructing the Territorial capitol. Subsequently he was appointed by Governor Henry DODGE, Auditor of Public Accounts for the Territory of WI, following which he served as private secretary for Governor DODGE, and then in 1848, upon the admission of WI as a State, acted in the same capacity for Governors NELSON, DEWEY, and William A. BARSTOW. In 1861 George P. DELAPLAINE was appointed on the military staff of Governor Alexander RANDALL, and since then has resided in Madison, Dane County, WI. His father, who was an author and published in 1815 "Delaplaine's Repository of the Lives and Portraits of Distinguished American Characters," died in Philadelphia, PA, in 1824. George P. DELAPLAINE was married in 1841 to Miss Emeline T. SMITH, by whom he had four daughters. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
