WI BIO - Dane Co - COON, Henry C. Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893. Vol II, pp 540-541 Henry C. COON, a successful farmer of Dane County, WI, was born in Allegany County, NY, 01 Mar 1835, a son of Jonathan and Martha (COLGROVE) COON, the former a native of Berlin, Rensselaer County, NY, and the latter of Charlestown [Washington County], RI. They were of English descent. The father died in 1850, and the mother is still living at the home of our subject, aged 86 years, she being the oldest American citizen now living in Albion Township [Dane County, WI]. They were the parents of two children, our subject and a daughter, Marinda. The latter was born in Allegany County, NY, is still unmarried, and resides with her mother and brother. The father was a carpenter and joiner by occupation, but after coming to WI, in 1844, he adopted farming as his vocation. Henry C., the subject of this sketch, did not receive many advantages for an education in his native State, and these chances were not bettered by coming the then semiwilderness of WI. At the age of [p 541] 15 years he left school and began work on his father's farm of a quarter section of land on section 29, which has been put under an excellent state of cultivation, until it ranks second to none in the township in excellency. The father dying when he was young, Mr. COON was early forced into the active management of the home and farm. His energies have been directed to general farming and stock raising, in which he has been more than ordinarily successful. Politically he affiliates with the Republican party, has bee elected Justice of the Peace and Supervisor a number of terms, and also to other less important trusts. Although naturally of a social nature, Mr. COON has not as yet united in marriage. The family are members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Albion Center [Dane County], WI. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
