WI BIO - Dane Co - ARIANS, Charles Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893. Vol II, pp 541 Charles ARIANS, merchant and Postmaster of North Bristol, Dane County, WI, carrying a large stock of goods and doing an extensive trade, has managed the business alone for the past seven years, succeeding his father in 1885. His father, John ARIANS, laid out and named North Bristol, starting the store there thirty years ago. Besides the store and post office, Mr. ARIANS managed a cheese factory for six or seven years, being all his life a man of great industry and application to business. John ARIANS was born in Westphalia, Germany, in 1824, of good old German stock, his parents being highly respected and attached to the Fatherland so strongly that they could not be prevailed upon to leave, but ended their days there. John ARIANS grew up at home, where he was educated, and when a young man and unmarried came to the U. S. with other members of the family. This was before the day of steamboats and the ocean voyage was made in a sailing vessel. Landing at NY our subject proceeded to Deerfield, [Dane County], WI, by way of Milwaukee, where after some years of arduous work, he became a merchant, having saved up sufficient money to buy a stock of goods. He remained at Deerfield for several years as a merchant before going to North Bristol. John ARIANS was married at Deerfield, [Dane County], WI, to Julia SUMMERGER, who was born in Prussia, Germany, coming over to the U. S. when a young woman and settling at once at Deerfield. She is yet living, at the age of 65, healthy and very active. Her married life was a very happy one, and she was a true and devoted wife, unselfishly seeking to lessen the burdens and cares of her kind husband. John ARIANS died 18 Dec 1885, in the faith of the Catholic Church, of which he was a lifelong member and to which his wife belongs, she being connected with St. Joseph (German Catholic) of East Bristol. Charles ARIANS was born at Deerfield, [Dane County], WI, 02 Nov 1858, and was yet quite young when the family went to North Bristol, Dane County, WI. He may be said to have grown right up to his business, as he began at an early age to assist in the store. There has come down to him from his father a measure of pluck, energy and industry that will take him bravely through the world. He is a most worthy son of an upright father. His brothers and sisters are: (1) Flora, living at home; (2) Eda, wife of John HELM, a carpenter, living at North Bristol; (3) Anton, managing the creamery for the family; (4) Ernest, assisting Charles in the store; all but Eda living at home. Our subject is unmarried, and he and his brothers and sisters are Catholics. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
