ADAMS of Madison, Dane County, WI, was born in Verona, Oneida County, NY, 28 Nov 1850, a son of B. F. and Caroline M. (SHEPHARD) ADAMS, also natives of that place. Henry C., the only child, was brought by his father to Jefferson County, WI, at the age of six months, where he was reared to farm life. He first attended the common schools, and in 1868 entered Albion Academy. After remaining there one year he attended the WI State University, being a member of the class of 1874 during its freshman and sophomore years. Ill health compelled him to drop his college course for three years, when he again entered the university as a junior with the class of 1876, but was only able to remain one term. He afterward read law in the office of Gregory & [p 379] Pinney, after which his health again failed, and next took a course in the Business College of Madison. In 1875 he purchased a farm, and engaged in raising small fruits, and bought a number of thoroughbred Jersey cattle and began the dairy business. In 1883 Henry C. ADAMS was elected to the Legislature, in the Southeast Assembly District, receiving a majority of over 700 votes, was re-elected in 1885, with a majority of 1,050. He spent three years in farm institute work, conducted by Mr. MORRISON, in connection with the university; was a lecturer at the Farmers' Institute; president of the Dairymen's Association three terms; secretary of the State Horticultural society two terms; has been a member of the State Board of Agriculture for a number of years; was a delegate at large from WI to the convention which nominated HARRISON in 1888; for a short time, 1887, he was manager and editor of the "Western Farm;" superintendent of public property for two years, under Governor HOARD; was then associated with the firm of C. M. Dow & Company; later with Mr. VERNON; and is now interested in farming and real estate. He has bee a correspondent for several agricultural journals. Henry C. ADAMS was married 15 Oct 1878 to Annie B. NORTON, who was born and reared in Madison, Dane County, WI. They have four children: Benjamin Cullen, Frank Shepard [Shephard?], Mabel, and Carrie.
