The father, who was a native of Ireland, was drowned while a resident of VT, bu the mother died in Reedsburg [Sauk County], WI, where she spent her last years. He then went to ID, by way of the overland route, and for some time was engaged in gold mining in ID, WA and OR. On his return to this state he became interested in hop culture at Sparta [Monroe County, WI] in company with his brother-in-law, Joseph L. GREEN.
