Educated at Albany public schools, Craftsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury Academy, class of 1894, Princeton University, class of 1898, A. B. (M. A. 1901), and New York Law School, class of 1901, L.L. B. Admitted to New York Bar 1901; was for two years managing clerk in law offices of Alexander & Colby, New York City; came to Burlington in 1903; admitted to Vermont Bar, January term, 1904; the same year formed a law partnership with Sherman R. MOULTON; in 1911 Joseph T. STEARNS taken into the partnership; in 1912 Mr. MOULTON withdrew, the firm now being Cowles & Stearns. Republican; alderman since 1909. Member of College Street Congregational Church. Member of Meridian Sun Lodge No. 20, Free & Accepted Masons, of Craftsbury. In 1905 he [Clarence Porter COWLES] married [Miss?] Laura E.
