Chittenden CLIFFORD, Newell E. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 75 (portrait p 75) Newell E. CLIFFORD, of Shelburne [Chittenden County, Vermont], was born 21 May 1850 in Starksboro [Addison County, Vermont], son of George B. and Sarah (REMINGTON) CLIFFORD. Availing himself of the usual educational facilities of his native town, upon reaching the age to choose an occupation he adopted that of his father, carpenter and builder. In 1880 he moved to Shelburne, where in 1887 he engaged with Dr. W. Seward WEBB of New York City, owner of Shelburne Farms, and has since been at the head and superintended the erection of the beautiful buildings on that magnificent estate. Since his majority he has taken much interest in public matters, especially in the schools of his town, and he has been entrusted by his townsmen with many responsible positions, being at present selectman, school director, and a member of the state Legislature. In this last position he served most creditably as chairman of the committee on public buildings, and was an efficient member of that on highways, bridges and ferries. He was largely influential in procuring the enactment of the new highway law, which has given such general satisfaction to the state and met such hearty approval in other states. On 31 December 1871 Mr. CLIFFORD was united in marriage to Mary J., daughter of Amos c. and Lucy A. COLE, of Starksboro [Addison County, Vermont]; of this union were born three children: Maud E., deceased; Edith F.; and Cicero G. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
