Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, pp 149-150 John Murray CLARKE, Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], physician, was born 21 September 1846 in Concord [Essex County, Vermont], son of Charles Chapman and Alice (MARSH) CLARKE. Educated in the public schools of Massachusetts, Green Mountain Institute, South Woodstock [Windsor County, Vermont], Harvard Medical College, and University of Vermont Medical College, M. D. 1878. Served as interne one year in city hospital at Hartford, Connecticut; joined medical staff at the Brattleboro Asylum 1872 as second assistant physician, the following year being promoted to first assistant superintendent, remaining there ten years; 1882 removed to Burlington and established Lake View Sanitarium for the treatment of nervous and mild mental diseases, continuing the institution to 1904; since then has devoted his time and experience to consultation work in mental diseases. Republican; alderman four years; chairman of commission to install city water filtration plant. Unitarian; served on church committee six years. Member of all Masonic bodies; past master, past high priest, and past eminent commander; 32 degrees Scottish Rite; member of Cairo Temple, Mystic Shrine; president Vermont State Medical Society 1888. In 1874 he [Dr. John Murray CLARKE] married [Miss?] Julia GLEASON of Hartford [Hartford County], Connecticut; they had three children: John Murray, deceased; Julia G., deceased; and Alice Gleason, wife of Edward P.
