Chittenden CHITTENDEN, Martin & Noah Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 832 (excerpt from a section on the history of Jericho, Chittenden, Vermont) Hon. Martin CHITTENDEN lived many years in Jericho [Chittenden County, Vermont], near his brother Noah. Representative many years before he removed to Williston [Chittenden County]. Hon. Noah CHITTENDEN, oldest son of Governor Thomas CHITTENDEN, was born in 1753, had entered public life previous to his coming to Jericho [Chittenden County, Vermont], as we find him sheriff of Addison County [Vermont] in 1785. He married a daughter of John FASSET of Bennington [Bennington County, Vermont], and had two children: Thomas, born in 1791; and Hannah, born in 1795, wife of Hon. Truman GALUSHA. His son Thomas, or as he was commonly called, Judge Thomas, after his father's death, removed to Ohio, where his son Thomas Jefferson [CHITTENDEN] still resides. Most of the original titles to land were lost by sheriff's sale for taxes. By this means "Judge Noah" became the owner of nearly or quite 2,000 acres, by far the most opulent landholder in town. He had, therefore, great influence, and was much employed in public business in town and county. We remember him well, a hale, stout, vivacious old gentleman. He [Noah CHITTENDEN] died rather suddenly of apoplexy [cerebrovascular accident or stroke] in 1835. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
