Burlington: Ullery Pub. Co., 1912, p 99 John H. ALLEN, harness maker and merchant, Hinesburg was born 18 July 1838 in Hinesburg [Chittenden County, Vermont], son of John and Roxana (CARPENTER) ALLEN. He was educated in the public schools of Hinesburg, People's Academy, Morrisville, and Potsdam Academy, Potsdam [St. Lawrence County], New York. He was employed in the stores of M. HULL, and Charles PHELPS, in Hinesburg, for three years, and for C. F. STAINFORD, Burlington [Vermont], for one year. In 1860 he took up his father's business of harness making, which he has continued to date, having been in the business fifty years. On 08 September 1862, John H. ALLEN enlisted in Company G, Fourteenth Vermont Regiment; was elected first lieutenant; participated in the battle of Gettysburg; and was mustered out on 30 July 1863. He was Captain of Company H, Vermont National Guard, 1872-1873. Mr. ALLEN is a Republican; he has held nearly all the town offices; he represented Hinesburg in the Legislature in 1880, elected in 1900, and re-elected in 1902 and 1904; and was assistant judge of Chittenden County. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and has been superintendent of the Sunday school thirty years. He was Junior warden of Patriot Lodge No. 33, Free & Accepted Masons, for several years; was the first commander of Cummings Post No. 37, Grand Army of the Republic; and companion of Vermont Commandery of the Loyal Legion. In 1857 John H. ALLEN married Elizabeth BURNS of Charlotte [Chittenden County, Vermont]. They had seven children: (1) Nelson Leroy, deceased; (2) John C.; (3) Mary L., Mrs. Henry CASSIDY, of Springfield [Hampden County], Massachusetts; (4) Katherine, Mrs. A. L. WALKER, of Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont]; (5) Howard, deceased; (6) Florence E.; and (7) Mabel, Mrs. Charles CLIFFORD, of Brandon. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
