Co., 1894, Part II, Sons of Vermonters, p 99 Heman Woods ALLEN, retired merchant, Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], was born 08 April 1844 at Westford [Chittenden County, Vermont], son of John and Clarissa (RICE) ALLEN. He was educated in the public schools, and was a graduate of Eastman Brothers Business College, Poughkeepsie [Dutchess County], New York, in 1864, and was an instructor in that institution several months. He was clerk for Edward LYMAN 1864-1868, when he became a member of the dry goods firm of Lyman & Allen 1868-1890; after the death of Mr. LYMAN in 1890 the business was conducted under the name of H. W. Allen & Company; in 1910 he retired from the firm; has been director of the Merchants National Bank since 1890; vice president since 1906; and vice president of the Farmers and Mechanics Loan and Trust Company of Burlington. Heman Woods ALLEN was a private in Company A, Thirteenth Vermont Regiment, 1862-1863; first lieutenant, Vermont Militia, 1864-1868, and was inspector of rifle practice on the staff of Governor WOODBURY with the rank of Colonel, 1894-1896. Republican; represented Chittenden County in the Senate 1896-1898; delegate to Republican National Convention in Chicago, 1904. Episcopalian; member of the vestry of St. Paul's Church for thirty years; junior warden twenty-four years; now senior warden. Mr. ALLEN is a member Stannard Post No. 2, Grand Army of the Republic; Sons of the American Revolution; Society of Colonial Wars; Algonquin Club; and Ethan Allen Club. In 1869 he [Heman Woods ALLEN] married [Miss?] Jennie D. DODS [DODDS?] of Burlington; she [Jennie D. ALLEN] died in 1875. In 1881 he married [Miss?] Juliette W. KEELER of Burlington; she [Juliette W.
