ADSIT, coal merchant, Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], was born 15 September 1850 in Chesterfield [Essex County, New York], son of Hollis and Mary (BIGELOW) ADSIT. He was educated at Chesterfield public schools, Burlington Free Academy; and at Langoly's Commercial College, Burlington. He was Foreman for Luther WHITNEY, a contractor, from 1867-1875. In 1875 with John J. BIGELOW, Mr. ADSIT purchased the coal business of S. K. WELLS, which was carried on under the name of Adsit & Bigelow for eighteen years; then purchased the BIGELOW interest, doing business as E. S. Adsit for twelve years, when a stock company was formed, the E. S. Adsit Coal Company, of which Mr. ADSIT is President. He is Director and Vice President of the Burlington Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In 1883 Elbridge S. ADSIT married [Miss?] Millie A. CLARY. Mr. ADSIT is a Republican. He has been Chief of Police, an Alderman, and is now a member of the board of school commissioners. Mr. ADSIT holds membership in the Unitarian Church. He is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason; a member of Burlington Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar; a member of Cairo Temple, Mystic Shrine; and is also a member of the Society of Colonial Wars. In 1907 Mr. ADSIT laid out and built a street in Burlington which is named "Adsit Place." Submitted by Cathy Kubly
