Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 250 Charles Colburn LORD, editor and publisher, Groton [Caledonia County, Vermont], was born 29 August 1864 at Orange [Orange County, Vermont], son of John P. and Elizabeth (COLBURN) LORD. Educated in the public schools, Barre Academy, and at the preparatory department of Oberlin College. Mr. LORD remained at home for a time, helping his father at the forge as a country blacksmith. He taught school seven terms, and in 1887 spent the winter as clerk and sealer in a Maine logging camp. He became interested in printing when a lad, learning much from friends who were printers. In 1894 Mr. LORD began the publication of "The Observer" at West Topsham [Orange County, Vermont], continuing one year. He moved to Groton in 1897 and established "The Groton Times," which he sold to the St. Johnsbury "Republican" in 1903. He was foreman of the "Messenger" office, Morrisville [Lamoille County, Vermont], one year. In 1904 he purchased "The Groton Times" and continued its publication until 1910, when the paper was again sold to the St. Johnsbury Republican Company. Mr. LORD returned to Groton in 1911, and became manager of The Times Publishing Company, formed for the repurchasing of "The Groton Times," which has since been published at Groton. Republican. In 1889 Mr. [Charles Colburn] LORD married [Miss?] Etta May WILDS of Orange [Orange County, Vermont]; they have five children: Ralph Christie, Wendell Edmonds, Charles Delwin, Alice Etta, and Merle E., who died in infancy.
