Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 248 Edward Payson LEE, clergyman, Waterford [Vermont], was born 05 August 1839 at Waterford, [Caledonia County, Vermont], son of Nathaniel and Isabel Maria (JOHNSON) LEE. Educated in the public schools, St. Johnsbury Academy, Amherst College, and studied theology with Rev. Louis A. ARTHUR, Island Pond, Vermont, and Rev. R. F. PUTNAM, St. Johnsbury. Was Superintendent of schools, Brighton [Essex County, Vermont], 1868 and 1869; Deputy Collector of customs, Island Pond [Essex County, Vermont], 1867-1878. Ordained to the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal Church 1879; missionary in diocese of Vermont at West Rutland, Castleton, Hydeville, and Fair Haven [all in Rutland County], 1879-1891, with the exception of six months from January 1883, when he served as general missionary in the diocese of Maine; rector of St. James Church, West Somerville [Middlesex County], Massachusetts, 1892-1896; missionary at Ashland [Aroostock County], Maine, 1896-1898; Rector of Christ Church, Island Pond, 1898-1908, when he retired. Was delegate to the Tercentennial Convention of the church at Richmond in 1907. In August 1862, enlisted as private in Company A, Eleventh Vermont Volunteer Infantry; on organization of the company appointed fourth sergeant; and at the organization of the regiment commissioned first lieutenant of Company A; commissioned as captain of Company B in 1863, when the regiment had been transferred to the heavy artillery; served in the defenses of Washington from September 1862 to May 1864; was in the battles of Spottsylvania, North Anna River, Hanover Court House, Cold Harbor, Weldon Railroad, Fort Stevens, Charlestown, Opequon Creek, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, where he was wounded, and the three engagements at Petersburg. Member of the Masons since 1863. In 1866 he [Edward Payson LEE] married [Miss?] Permelia U. BROWN of Attleboro [Bristol County, Massachusetts]; she died 31 January 1875; they had three children: Edith Marguerite, Florence Permelia (deceased), and Edward Brown. In 1880 he [Edward Payson LEE] married [Miss?] Sarah Bard McVICKAR of New York; she died 1886; in 1891 he married [Miss?] Virginia Howard JOHNSON of Bangor [Penobscot County], Maine; they have one daughter, Isabella Maria.
