Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 239 ([portrait p 239) Henry James LANE, of East Burke [Caledonia County, Vermont], was born 01 March 1855, son of Sylvanus and Martha (BALCH) LANE. Received his preparatory education in the public and graded schools of Lunenburg [Essex County, Vermont]; entered the U. V. M. [University of Vermont] in 1881, and four years later graduated from the classical department. In 1887 received the degree of M. D. from the Burlington Medical College, and soon after fixed his abode in East Burke, where he entered upon the practice of his profession and where he still continues to reside. Born and reared upon a farm, during his educational career he partially gained his support by employment as a clerk a Burke in the intervals of study. Dr. LANE has been appointed to serve on the state board of health and is special health officer for Burke [Caledonia County] and East Haven [Essex County], has been made superintendent of schools, and in 1892 was elected as a Republican to the lower branch of the state legislature, where he was a member of the joint special committee for public health and reform, also on special committee on elections in Caledonia County. An ardent advocate and stanch supporter of temperance. Served on several special committees in the legislature appointed to consider this important subject. By all means in his power labors to advance the cause of total abstinence and prohibition. Congregationalist. Member of Union Lodge No. 4, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lyndonville [Caledonia County]. Also takes an active interest in the order of Good Templars.
