Caledonia INGALLS, Joseph H. Vermont Historical Magazine, No. XI, October 1867, p 419 (extracted from a section on the history of Sheffield, Caledonia County, Vermont) Hon. Joseph H. INGALLS, father of the Hon. John P. INGALLS of this town [Sheffield, Caledonia County, Vermont], was born in 1774 in Madbury, Massachusetts [Madbury, Strafford County, New Hampshire?]. Came into Wheelock [Caledonia County, Vermont] about 1797, where he married Comfort WEEKS, daughter of Capt. Joshua WEEKS of that town with little or no property, but by industry and strict attention to business became a wealthy man. At one time he owned nearly all the land where our village [Sheffield] is now situated. He was one of the most influential citizens in the place, and for a long series of years held responsible offices in town. He was a member of the Vermont Legislature eighteen years, and of the senate one year. As a man of sound judgment and thorough business habits, he probably never had a superior in town. His decease [the death of Joseph H. INGALLS] occurred 14 June 1850, aged seventy-six years. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
