HAMSCOM, Sheffield [Caledonia County, Vermont], general auctioneer, was born 03 March 1847 at Barnston, Province of Quebec, Canada, son of Elias Bean and Rosella (DANFORTH) HANSCOM. Educated in the public schools of Sheffield and Wheelock. Enlisted on 24 June 1864 enlisted, at the age of seventeen years, in the Eleventh Regiment Vermont Volunteers; was in the Shenandoah Valley campaign, and fought in the battles of Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, and many other engagements; was in the army until the close of the war. After the close of the war [Civil War officially ended April 1865] Mr. HAMSCOM engaged in farming for thirty-three years. In 1875 he began a successful career as an auctioneer. In 1898 sold his farm and removed to Sheffield village. Is local manager of the Greensboro & Glover Telephone Company. Republican. Member of the Methodist Church; was steward for twenty years, and superintendent of the Sunday school from 1895 to 1899. Member of the Grand Army of the Republic; commander for several years.
