Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 205 Jacob G. GRAY, Sheffield, farmer, was born 27 May 1841 in Sheffield [Caledonia County, Vermont], son of Reuben and Annie (MILES) GRAY. [Reuben GRAY born in New Hampshire and Annie (MILES) GRAY born in Vermont?] Educated in the public schools. In early youth worked on farm, attending school during winter months. In 1861 purchased a farm in Sheffield, which he sold when he enlisted. Enlisted August 1862 in Company K, Fourth Vermont Volunteer Infantry; promoted to Corporal; served until the close of the war [Civil War officially ended April 1865]; was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness [fought in May 1864], being shot through the left wrist. Was in the employ of General CHASE of Lyndon [Caledonia County] about three years; engaged in farming at Haverhill [Grafton County], New Hampshire, three years; located near Topeka [Shawnee County], Kansas, for a short time; in 1878 purchased the Evans farm at Barton [Orleans County, Vermont]; in 1893 a smaller farm, where he remained eight years; and later a residence in [the village of] Evansville, [township of] Brownington [Orleans County, Vermont], where he lived two years; removed to Sheffield in 1903.
