Caledonia FOSTER, John M. Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 351 (from a section on lawyers in the history of Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont) John M. FOSTER came next [to Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont, after Nathaniel GOODHUE, the first lawyer at Lyndon, who came in 1804 or 1805, and Samuel B. GOODHUE, his brother, who took Nathaniel's place and remained in Lyndon until 1811]. He [John M. FOSTER] had been in practice elsewhere, and being naturally bright and kinky, he was a troublesome opponent for our bachelor friend [means Samuel B. GOODHUE], and particularly so, when he was a little warmed up by the spirit of the bar [an italicized play on words]. Mr. FOWLER joined the army in 1812 and left town, probably in turn having been a little worried by the next coming lawyer, Isaac FLETCHER, who came to town [Lyndon] in 1811.
