Caledonia FOSTER, Enoch Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 427 (extracted from a section on the history of Walden; editor's note relates that this article furnished by a friend of the subject) Capt. Enoch FOSTER was born in 1770 at Bow [Merrimack County], New Hampshire [son of Ephraim FOSTER?]. At the age of eighteen he removed to Peacham [Caledonia County], Vermont, with his parents, where he lived until 1800, when he removed to Walden [Caledonia County]. Much of his early manhood was spent in the woods. He was often employed as a guide by the early settlers, to conduct them to different parts of the country. Indian Joe was his constant companion in the woods for a number of years. Capt. FOSTER was a man of stern integrity and possessed great energy, which together, made him a friend of all. Many are the strangers that remember his generous hospitality. He lived to follow four of his six children to the grave, and died [30 March 1854 at Walden, Caledonia County, Vermont] at the age of eighty-four years. He was a member of the Congregational church for forty years, and died as he had lived, a zealous Christian. [According to LDS records, Enoch FOSTER was married in Caledonia County, Vermont, to Polly GUY, born 10 May 1776 at Peacham, Caledonia County, Vermont, and had five children: Merrill, born 10 February 1795; Parley, born 28 October 1800; Martha, born 29 August 1802; Ephraim, born 25 April 1805; and Polly, born 27 April 1808.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
