Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, pp 155-156 James CRAIGIE, South Ryegate [Caledonia County, Vermont], granite dealer, was born 20 October 1865 in Leeds, Province of Quebec, son of William and Marguerite (CRAIGIE) CRAIGIE. Educated at Leeds Model School. Began the work of farming at an early age; in 1888-1893 employed by E. and T. Fairbanks Company, St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County]; in 1893 removed to South Ryegate, taking up the granite business which he has since conducted; in 1905 purchased the Caledonia Park and built a large granite shed. Enlisted 20 March 1899 at Boston in the Sixth U. S. Artillery, went to San Francisco, California, to Honolulu, 18 April 1899, where he was on garrison duty; 30 November 1899, went to Philippine Islands on guard duty; participated in several expeditions against insurgents in Battan Province, which culminated in the surrender of insurgent forces under General MESCARDO. Was in the service until 20 October 1902, when his enlistment expired; promoted to corporal, 17 March, and sergeant 12 October 1901. Republican; deputy sheriff two years; constable eight years; tax collector one year; fish and game warden two years; trustee of the village of South Ryegate. Member of First Presbyterian Church of South Ryegate and member of the Brotherhood of the church. Member of Masonic fraternity, and chief forester of the Modern Woodmen of America.
